미국 NCCAM에서는 보완대체의학을 크게 Alternative Medical System, Mind-Body Intervention, Biologically Based Therapies, Manipulative and Body-Based Methods, Energy Therapies 등 5가지로 나누고 있다 Alternative Medical System이란 한의학, 동종요법, 요가 등 기존의 현대의학과 완전히 theory 과 실제가 달라 진단과 치료가 현대의학과 확연히 구별되는 다른 의학체계를 말하며, Mind-Body Intervention이란 음악치료, 인지행동치료, 최면 등 신체의 기능과 증상에 influence(영향)을 미치는 마음의 능력을 보강하기 위해 만들어진 다양한 요법을 일컫는다.
